Students in Kenya finish school in different ways: with the KCSE, A Levels, the IB Diploma, or an American diploma with AP courses. Yours shapes where you can apply and what each university will ask of you.

START WITH YOUR QUALIFICATION
If you’re taking the KCSE, you use your results to apply to Kenya’s universities through KUCCPS. Universities abroad look at your results, your school’s grading, and your subjects, whichever qualification you finish with, and each reads them in its own way.
KENYAN CURRICULUM
You sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at the end of Form 4, after four years of secondary school. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) runs it.
BRITISH CURRICULUM
You usually take three or four A Levels in your last two years, for example at an international school.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
You take six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, plus the core. Your teachers predict your grades before the final exams in May.
AMERICAN CURRICULUM
Your school’s diploma and GPA, usually with Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams, for example at an international school.

Who sits it: In 2026, the KCSE is the exam for Form 4 students. Grade 10 students in Senior School register their subjects with KNEC for their own assessments.
The 2026 exam: It runs from October 19 to November 20, 2026, after a rehearsal day on October 16. It opens with orals and practicals.
Results: KNEC posted the 2025 results on January 9, 2026. You get your result slip from your school once results are released, and your certificate is issued through your school.
Grades: KCSE grades run from A to E. To apply for a degree program through KUCCPS, you need a mean grade of at least C+.
Applying to Cambridge: Cambridge strongly recommends further study, such as A Levels or the IB, if you’re taking the KCSE. If you plan to apply with five AP exams and the KCSE, or after a first year at a university outside the UK, it recommends contacting the colleges you’re considering first.
KUCCPS: The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) places students in government-sponsored programs at universities and colleges. You apply online through its student portal, where each program lists its minimum requirements. You can also get help applying at any Huduma Centre.
When: The 2027 dates aren’t published yet. In 2026, applications ran from April 7 to May 6. A second call, from May 16 to 22, was for students who qualified for a degree program but hadn’t applied or hadn’t been placed. Placement results came out on July 8.
Who can apply: In 2026, the round was open to the 2025 KCSE class and to Form 4 leavers from earlier years.
Self-sponsored programs: Some students choose self-sponsored programs at universities and colleges instead of KUCCPS placement.
Funding: Once placement results are out, placed students can apply for funding through the Higher Education Financing portal.
COMPARE THE SYSTEMS
You can apply to all three in the same year, and we help with all three. Each has its own application, deadlines, and idea of a strong applicant, so give each one its own plan.
UNITED STATES
Selective colleges look at your grades in the context of your school, alongside your essays, activities, teacher and counselor letters, and test scores where they ask for them. You apply to each college separately, often through the Common App.

UNITED KINGDOM
You apply through UCAS to up to five courses, with one personal statement for all of them. Universities look closely at your subjects and predicted grades, and some courses add an admissions test or interview.

KENYA
After your results come out, you apply online to KUCCPS, which places students in government-sponsored programs at public and private universities and colleges. A degree program needs a mean grade of at least C+, and each program lists its own minimum requirements.

EducationUSA, the U.S. government’s network of study advisers, has an advising center at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. It offers advising by appointment and group sessions for students.

U.S., UK, and Kenyan deadlines, exams, results, and placements fall at different times. Seeing them together shows where your exams meet your applications, and where you may need to decide before every result is in.

U.S. dates vary by college, so check each college’s own page. KUCCPS hasn’t published its 2027 dates, so those follow 2026.

PLAN THE COST
A U.S. bachelor’s degree usually takes four years, and many UK degrees take three. Exchange rates can change over that time, so plan for the full degree, not just the first year.
YOUR YEARLY BUDGET
Letrado’s adviceRun your budget twice: once at today’s exchange rate and once with the shilling 10% weaker. Keep at least one option that still works.
UK Student visa: You can apply up to six months before your course starts, and you’ll usually get a decision within three weeks. You pay the health surcharge for every year of your visa when you apply.
A TB test for the UK: If you’re coming to the UK for six months or more, have lived in Kenya for six months or more, and were living there in the last six months, you need a TB test at a clinic approved by the Home Office. If you don’t have TB, you get a certificate that’s valid for six months from your x-ray. Include it with your visa application.
U.S. student (F-1) visa: You apply once your college has sent your I-20 form. If you’re a U.S. citizen, you don’t need one.
