Students in Nigeria finish school in different ways: with WAEC’s WASSCE or NECO’s SSCE, A Levels, the IB Diploma, or an American diploma with AP courses. Yours shapes where you can apply and what each university will ask of you.
For 2027 entry
START WITH YOUR QUALIFICATION
At a Nigerian secondary school, you finish with WAEC’s WASSCE or NECO’s SSCE, and you apply to Nigerian universities through JAMB’s UTME. With A Levels, the IB, or an American diploma, universities abroad look at your results, your school’s grading, and your subjects, each in its own way.
NIGERIAN CURRICULUM
You sit WAEC’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or NECO’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) at the end of secondary school. For a Nigerian degree, JAMB asks for at least five credit passes, including English, from no more than two sittings.
BRITISH CURRICULUM
You usually take three or four A Levels in your last two years, for example at an international school.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
You take six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, plus the core. Your teachers predict your grades before the final exams in May.
AMERICAN CURRICULUM
Your school’s diploma and GPA, usually with Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams, for example at an international school.
Letrado’s adviceAsk your counselor for your school profile early. It explains your curriculum and grading, and U.S. colleges read it alongside your transcript. If you’ll finish with WASSCE or NECO, check early whether each UK course you like accepts it or asks for more study first.
WASSCE: WAEC hasn’t published its 2027 timetable yet. In 2026, the WASSCE for school candidates in Nigeria ran from April 21 to June 19, starting with practicals and orals.
NECO: NECO’s 2026 SSCE Internal ran from June 15 to July 23.
Cambridge with AP exams: If you plan to apply with five AP exams and WASSCE, Cambridge recommends contacting the colleges you’re considering first. It also lists the first year of a university degree outside the UK as a possible route.
The UTME: JAMB hasn’t announced its 2027 dates yet. In 2026, registration ran from January 26 to February 28, the exam was set for April 16 to 25, and registration cost ₦7,200 (₦8,700 with an optional mock exam).
Waiting for results: You can register while you’re still awaiting WASSCE or NECO results. Upload them to JAMB’s portal as soon as they’re out, because JAMB won’t consider a university’s recommendation until you do.
Entry requirements: Beyond your five credit passes, science, technology, and social science programs need Mathematics. For 2026, JAMB’s minimum UTME score for universities was 150, and applicants generally had to be at least 16 by September 30, 2026.
How offers work: Universities make offers through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Once JAMB approves one, you’re told by email and text message to accept or reject it, and then you print your admission letter. JAMB says it won’t recognize an admission accepted outside CAPS.
Direct Entry: If you have A Level results, including Cambridge A Levels, JAMB’s Direct Entry route lets you apply with them and your WASSCE or NECO credits, but not while you’re still awaiting them. In 2026, its forms were on sale from March 2 to April 25.
COMPARE THE SYSTEMS
You can apply to all three in the same year, and we help with all three. Each has its own application, deadlines, and idea of a strong applicant, so give each one its own plan.
UNITED STATES
Selective colleges look at your grades in the context of your school, alongside your essays, activities, teacher and counselor letters, and test scores where they ask for them. You apply to each college separately, often through the Common App.

UNITED KINGDOM
You apply through UCAS to up to five courses, with one personal statement for all of them. Universities look closely at your subjects and predicted grades, and some courses add an admissions test or interview.

NIGERIA
You sit JAMB’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and choose your institution and course when you register. JAMB sets a minimum UTME score, 150 for universities in 2026, and your WASSCE or NECO results count too. Offers are made through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Letrado’s adviceIf you’re sitting WASSCE or NECO in 2027, a Nigerian offer can’t come until your results are on JAMB’s portal, after the U.S. reply date. Put both on one calendar before you apply.
EducationUSA, the U.S. government’s network of study advisers, has an advising center at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos. It lists free counseling sessions, a membership program with a fee, and the Opportunity Funds program for highly qualified students who lack the financial resources.

In 2026 they came out on August 11. UK universities then confirm conditional offers.
U.S. dates vary by college, so check each college’s own page. JAMB, WAEC, and NECO haven’t published their 2027 dates yet, so those follow 2026.

PLAN THE COST
A U.S. bachelor’s degree usually takes four years, and many UK degrees take three. Exchange rates can change over that time, so plan for the full degree, not just the first year.
YOUR YEARLY BUDGET
Letrado’s adviceRun your budget twice: once at today’s exchange rate and once with a much weaker naira. Keep at least one option that still works.
UK Student visa: You can apply up to six months before your course starts. You pay the health surcharge for every year of your visa when you apply.
UK tuberculosis (TB) test: Nigeria is on the UK’s list of countries where visa applicants need a TB test. You need one if you’re coming for six months or more, have lived in Nigeria for at least six months, and were living there within the last six months. The test is a chest x-ray at a clinic approved by the Home Office. If it shows you don’t have TB, your certificate is valid for six months from the x-ray, and you include it with your visa application.
U.S. student (F-1) visa: You apply once your college has sent your I-20 form. If you’re a U.S. citizen, you don’t need one.
