Students in the UAE finish school with many different qualifications: A Levels after IGCSEs, an American diploma with AP courses, the IB Diploma, CBSE Class 12, or the UAE’s own secondary certificate. Yours shapes where you can apply and what each university will ask of you.
For 2027 entry
START WITH YOUR QUALIFICATION
In the UAE, private schools teach a range of curricula. Those in Dubai, for example, offer British, American, Indian, and other curricula. Universities in the U.S., the UK, and the UAE each read your results, your school’s grading, and your subjects in their own way.
BRITISH CURRICULUM
You usually take three or four A Levels in your last two years, with an exam board such as Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel.
AMERICAN CURRICULUM
Your school’s diploma and GPA, usually with Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
You take six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, plus the core. Your teachers predict your grades before the final exams in May.
INDIAN CURRICULUM
You finish school with the Class 12 board exams set by India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Letrado’s adviceAsk your counselor for your school profile early. It explains your curriculum and grading, and U.S. colleges read it alongside your transcript. If you’re also applying in the UAE, ask your school early about the Ministry of Education’s equivalency for your certificate.
Cambridge and CBSE: Some Cambridge colleges accept CBSE Class 12 for a set list of courses, with minimum offers of A1 in five subjects relevant to your course. For other colleges or courses, Cambridge recommends further study first, such as A Levels, the IB, or at least five AP exams at grade 5 alongside A1 grades in Class 12.
Cambridge and the UAE’s certificate: Cambridge calls it the Tawjihiyya (General Secondary Education Certificate) and says it alone won’t be competitive. It suggests A Levels, the IB, or at least five AP exams at grade 5 with an overall Tawjihiyya grade of at least 95. It may also accept a first year of university study outside the UK.
Oxford: It doesn’t accept the Tawjihiyah. It accepts CBSE Class 12 with high grades that depend on the course.
Your certificate’s equivalency: The Ministry of Education issues equivalencies for certificates from private schools, which gives them official recognition in the UAE and abroad. You apply online or at its offices in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, with copies of your Emirates ID and passport and your attested certificates, mainly for Grades 10, 11, and 12.
Emirati students: If you’re Emirati, or your mother is, you apply online through the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s National Unified Registration System, which covers public and private universities in the UAE.
NYU Abu Dhabi, for example: It runs its own admissions, with deadlines of November 1 for Early Decision I, January 1 for Early Decision II, and January 5 for Regular Decision, at 11:59 pm U.S. Eastern time. Decisions follow on December 15, February 15, and April 1.
Its Candidate Weekends: NYU Abu Dhabi invites finalists to Candidate Weekend, the last step before decisions, and covers travel and accommodation where needed. If you’re invited, you need to attend to stay eligible. For 2027 entry, the weekends are December 11–13, February 5–7, and March 19–21.
Its aid: It accepts aid applications from students of every citizenship, and its grants for students who aren’t Emirati are based on financial need. You file the CSS Profile before decisions come out, by the date for your round.
COMPARE THE SYSTEMS
You can apply to all three in the same year, and we help with all three. Each has its own application, deadlines, and idea of a strong applicant, so give each one its own plan.
UNITED STATES
Selective colleges look at your grades in the context of your school, alongside your essays, activities, teacher and counselor letters, and test scores where they ask for them. You apply to each college separately, often through the Common App.

UNITED KINGDOM
You apply through UCAS to up to five courses, with one personal statement for all of them. Universities look closely at your subjects and predicted grades, and some courses add an admissions test or interview.
Letrado’s adviceChoose a subject you’d enjoy studying for three years, then check each course’s subject requirements before anything else.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
If you’re Emirati, or your mother is, you apply through the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s national registration system, which covers public and private universities in the UAE. If you’re not, check each university’s own admissions process. NYU Abu Dhabi, for example, has Early Decision and Regular Decision rounds and invites finalists to a Candidate Weekend.

Harvard’s come by the end of March, and Yale’s in late March.

In 2026 they came out on July 6.
Exam results Mid-August
In 2026 they came out on August 11. UK universities then confirm conditional offers.

PLAN THE COST
A U.S. bachelor’s degree usually takes four years, and many UK degrees take three, so plan for the whole degree. Because the dirham is pegged to the U.S. dollar, it’s mainly your UK costs that move with exchange rates.
YOUR YEARLY BUDGET
Letrado’s adviceThe dirham is pegged to the U.S. dollar at 3.6725 dirhams to one dollar, so exchange rates barely change your U.S. costs. The pound isn’t pegged, so run your UK budget again with the pound 10% stronger and keep an option that still works.
UK Student visa: You can apply up to six months before your course starts. You pay the health surcharge for every year of your visa when you apply.
U.S. student (F-1) visa: You apply once your college has sent your I-20 form. If you’re a U.S. citizen, you don’t need one.
