Fall 2027 entry
GET TO KNOW THE SCHOOL
Choate had 859 students in 2025–26, including 649 boarders, from 40 U.S. states and territories and 57 countries of citizenship. Nine in ten faculty members live on campus.
IN CLASS
Choate runs on trimesters. Each class meets three times a week, with no Saturday classes, shorter Wednesdays, and a later start on Thursdays.
GOING DEEPER
Eight programs, from robotics and Arabic to government and science research, are designed for students with clear goals. You can join only one.
IN YOUR DORM
Ninth graders have their own dorms, 10th and 11th graders stay two years in the same one, and seniors and PGs live together. Trained older students live alongside you as prefects.
Every student has a faculty adviser from the start, under a multi-year advising model, and form deans and prefects add support.
Entry points: Choate admits students to grades 9, 10, and 11 and for a postgraduate (PG) year, and Gateway also lists grade 12. You apply for one grade and one status, boarding or day.
Postgraduate year: Choate admits 15 to 25 PGs a year. They take five courses a term, usually room with other PGs in senior dorms, and graduate with the class.
Repeating a grade: You can apply to repeat your current grade, which Choate calls reclassifying.
Placement: New students take placement tests in math and languages, and departments match earlier courses to Choate’s requirements, so repeating a grade doesn’t mean repeating courses.
Signature Programs: Eligibility varies by program, so check the requirements for the grade you’re entering.
Every term and every year: English every term, plus Choate’s Lifelong Wellness program and at least ten hours of community service every year.
Across your years: Three years of language study, or courses through the third-year level; math through Algebra II; a year each of lab biology and lab physics or chemistry; a year of U.S. history; and a term of philosophy or religion. If you enter in ninth or tenth grade, you also take a year of world history.
The arts: Three term-long courses in two of four areas (music, theater, dance, and visual arts), including one in your senior year.

Choate considers your interview, recommendations, grades, courses, and activities together. It sets no minimum grades or scores, and testing is optional.

WHAT CHOATE DESCRIBES
Choate strongly encourages an interview in the current cycle. Interviews happen online only, between September and February, and each applicant has one. Admission officers, faculty members, and graduates all interview, and every interview carries the same weight.
An invitation to book arrives by email after you complete the inquiry form. The 45-minute slot includes 20 to 25 minutes one-on-one with you, and then registered family members can talk with the interviewer without you.
WHAT CHOATE SAYS
Choate never judges you on scores alone and won’t penalize you for not sending them.
If you send scores, Choate reads them with your grades and recommendations, taking your best score in each section across test dates.
Scores must come from tests taken in June 2026 or later for grade 9, June 2025 or later for grades 10 and 11, and June 2024 or later for a PG year. Choate’s admission process page words the score dates differently, so confirm the accepted tests and score dates with Choate for your entry year. The SSAT and ISEE are entrance tests for private schools.
Reports come straight from the testing agency, or your counselor can send verified PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores. Choate offers test fee waivers, which you request by email.
WHAT CHOATE AND GATEWAY SAY
Choate’s admission pages don’t publish a rule on AI or on outside help with applications. Gateway’s Candidate Profile asks you to certify that everything you submit, including any essays, is “factually accurate and honestly presented,” and that your admission may be revoked if it isn’t.

Choate doesn’t provide tutors: extra help starts with your teachers, several departments run peer tutoring, and the Teaching and Learning Center coaches study skills and time management.

The first three figures come from the 2025–26 school profile. Choate doesn’t publish a current average class size, student-to-teacher ratio, or admission rate.
PLAN THE APPLICATION
Choate takes applications through Gateway to Prep Schools, an online application that many boarding and day schools share. Decisions arrive on March 10, 2027, and the reply date for admitted students is April 10, 2027.

Mar 10, 2027When your Gateway application is in on time, you can still expect a March 10 decision if recommendations, transcripts, or scores arrive on or before February 1, 2027. Choate also needs current-year grades, or grades in progress, on or before February 1, 2027.
Start with Choate’s inquiry form, then the Candidate Profile. Gateway lists the fee as $75 for domestic applicants and $125 for international applicants, and fee waivers are available.
From your principal or counselor and your current English and math teachers, plus an optional third teacher or personal recommendation. Your school sends current grades and the last two years.
Optional. Grade 9 applicants can send the SSAT or ISEE; grades 10 and 11 the SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, or ACT; PGs the PSAT, SAT, or ACT. Choate superscores.

Sending: Each form reaches Choate the moment you submit it and can’t be changed in Gateway afterward.
Privacy and cost: Each school sees only that you applied to it, not where else. Gateway itself is free.
Who counts as international: Choate looks at where your current school is and at your citizenship. U.S. citizens studying abroad apply as domestic applicants.
English tests: Strongly encouraged, not required, if English isn’t your first language or you haven’t had two years of English-language schooling. Choate looks for at least TOEFL 100, IELTS 7, or Duolingo 130, and it offers no ESL classes.
Fee: Gateway lists a $125 application fee for international applicants.
Financial aid: Aid is available. Families outside the U.S. complete Clarity in U.S. dollars and add an international aid profile and income documents.
Student visa: Choate’s Global Engagement Office helps F-1 students keep their visa status.
Arriving: New international students attend a required pre-orientation, and each is matched with a peer mentor.
Breaks: Dorms close for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks, so you’ll need somewhere to stay. Every student also needs a U.S. phone number and health insurance.
Late applications: Choate still accepts applications while Gateway is open. When everything arrives on or before February 1, 2027, it makes every effort to decide on March 10; applications that arrive after March 10 are unlikely to be offered a place.
Changing your grade or status: Gateway lets you change your grade or your boarding or day status until you submit a form or send a recommendation request. After that, Choate needs a written request.
Adding materials: Upload extras to your Application Status Portal. Extra personal recommendations go straight from the writer to Choate.
WRITE IN YOUR OWN VOICE
Prompts appear in your applicationChoate doesn’t publish its essay prompts or word limits on its website. They appear in Part 2 of the Gateway application, with the parent statement.
Choate asks your application to show your academic background, interests, responsibilities, and perspective. Use the essays to add what grades and activity lists can’t show.

Read each prompt closely and answer it with real moments from your own life, in your own voice.
It’s a required part of the application. Parents can describe what they see at home, which no one else can.
Choate asks about your responsibilities as well as your interests. Helping at home or a part-time job can belong in your application.
Gateway’s grid asks for years, hours a week, and weeks a year for each activity, and says it understands that some students have more chances for organized activities than others. Honest numbers say more than an inflated list.
Your current English and math teachers see how you work in class. An optional personal recommendation can come from another adult who knows you well.
MAKE ROOM FOR THE FINANCIAL QUESTION
About 35% of students receive need-based aid, with no loans and no merit scholarships. Aid can cover books, supplies, laundry, and travel as well as tuition.

Choate’s aid FAQ says every application is first read without regard to aid, but that need may influence admission decisions when the applicant pool’s total need exceeds the aid budget.

$74,530Day students pay $57,610. Both include a $1,000 technology fee, and Choate suggests budgeting about $1,000 more for books, supplies, and incidentals.
